Goodbye, April

I can't believe April is already over.  The weather has been so crazy (50s one day, 80s the next) that I've had a hard time believing it is spring.  I think we're probably done with snow now, though, so hopefully we get some more 70s before it gets (and stays!) hot.

Cormac is getting his third tooth, on top this time.  He has been extra drooly and more frantic as he tries to bite and chew things!  He likes to eat baby cereal (like rice puffs, that dissolve easily) and can pick them up himself sometimes, when he isn't too spazzy   :)  He still isn't crawling, but he gets close.  He gets on hands and knees/toes and kind of walks his feet, but doesn't move his hands so he just pushes himself forward and falls.  He's still more interested in walking and cruises along the couch really fast now.

We're going to the Grand Canyon next month, hopefully he doesn't mind the long car ride!  And hopefully he likes being in his new hiking backpack.  We're going to try and find a short hike nearby to get him used to it, if we ever have the time.

Scott is still very busy with work and church stuff.  Some of it is really great though -we got to attend the temple for a family sealing and it was really special.  We'd never been to one with children being sealed to their parents, and it was a great experience.

Cormac still likes tiny chunks of food, instead of purees, crazy kid.  But whatever he will eat, works for me.  He tried strawberries, and really liked them.  He made some funny faces, but kept taking more, so I could tell he was enjoying the new flavor!

Cormac's such a happy boy!  He smiles all the time and laughs a lot more now, too.  He is getting so anxious to be able to move around on his own.  He tries jumping and pushing off things, which makes it a little nerve-wracking to try to hold onto him, but I feel very blessed that he is healthy and oh so happy.

My family came to visit over Easter weekend. My parents flew in from NH, Shea and Gretel came down from Rexburg and Brock and Eliza came across the street :)

We all went to the aquarium, which the kids loved. Cormac's favorite movie is Finding Nemo, so he was mesmerized when we held him up to the tanks to watch the fish!

My mom had her 50th birthday while we were together, so we celebrated with some cake and presents. My grandparents were visiting from Roosevelt (for my uncle's baby blessing), so it worked out nicely to have them come, too.

It was fun to get everyone together, but I really need to be better about taking more pictures. I like having a lot of good ones to choose from, and I really didn't take that many. And it was a perfect opportunity to have people take pictures of me and Scott and Cormac, and I don't think we got any of the three of us (all together). So that's something I am trying to remember better!

Cormac is getting a little more social, which is fun. He has always loved smiling at people, but now he leans toward them sometimes so they'll hold him. He lasts a few minutes before he wants to come back to me, but after a few days of being passed around with my family, he did better and let others hold him longer. However, after everyone was gone, he seemed pretty mad that no one was holding him for long periods at a time. He wasn't as good about sitting on the floor and playing with me -he wanted me to pick him up after only a few minutes! So I'm trying to break him of that and get him back to being independent. It is taking longer than I thought it would.

I finally got him to eat some baby food this weekend. He hasn't liked the stuff I've made him before, and I thought it might be because he wants to feed himself. He loves banana chunks, but when I make it into a paste and spoon-feed him, he hates it. Same with apples and other stuff, he wants to eat things by holding them and gnawing on them. So I bought one of those baby food bag things that you can squeeze, to see if he'd suck on it and feed himself. He didn't really get it, but seemed to like the taste. Scott suggested I squeeze it onto a spoon and see if he'd eat it. And he did! He liked it a lot. I think because it was made with fruit/veggies and juice concentrate, instead of water, so it wasn't as bland as what I'd made him before. I might have to make his baby food with apple juice (100% fruit, of course) and then maybe he'll eat it.

He still isn't making progress with crawling, but he's able to take a few steps while holding onto the couch. And he goes wild when I first put him by the couch and let him stand! He is crazy about standing. I'm pretty sure he'll skip the crawling, and just figure out the walking -and I'm ok with that! He's stubborn, like his parents, so there's no use trying to push him too hard to do something he doesn't want to do! I won't give up on crawling, but I don't expect Cormac to get excited about it any time soon. He knows what he likes!

Cormac updates - 7.5 months

I am determined to be better about posting. I need to have somewhere to record all the fun ways that Cormac is changing and growing!

Cormac is such a happy little guy. He thinks people exist just to smile at him. When I take him to the store or library he is always spinning around looking for someone to smile at him. He goes crazy if no one is around or if people don't give him attention. When they do smile at him and say hi, he smiles with his whole body! He grins really big and shakes and kicks and wiggles to show how excited he is that someone wants to talk to him. It's fun, but also pretty distracting when we are trying to order food or get some other help while we are out!

Cormac sleeps so well at night now. He didn't for a while, so we finally decided to let him "cry it out" (we let him cry but periodically went in to comfort him, without picking him up) and after just one rough night, he was sleeping 11 hours. Sometimes he even sleeps 11.5, and he just wakes up and kicks and talks to himself until I come get him. He loves to kick his legs when he is waking up or falling asleep. He often just thumps one of them over and over -sometimes it wakes us up in the middle of the night if he is thumping himself back to sleep :) He doesn't nap very well, but is slowly getting better. He was sleeping in frustrating half-hour spurts unless I held him, but I am able to keep him up a little longer now, and he'll sleep an hour or more sometimes.

Cormac used to only take his binky when he was getting sleepy. Now, he will take it other times, which is nice, so we can keep him quieter in church. He used to spit it out a lot so he could smile at people, but now he's figured out a way to keep it in his mouth and smile at the same time! He pushes the soft part up against the top of his mouth with his tongue, then hooks his bottom lip out in front of the bottom edge of the binky. It's pretty impressive, and makes us laugh all the time. I need to try and get a picture of it!

Cormac has been sitting up on his own since 5 months, but he isn't crawling yet. He pushes himself backwards and gets annoyed that things end up even farther away! He seems like he really doesn't care about crawling most of the time. He'd rather have us hold his hands so he can stand up. But we've helped him push up to hands and knees (instead of thighs) and he likes to rock like that for a minute or two, so he'll probably figure it out soon. I'm excited for him to be mobile, though I know it means a lot more work for us!
